Explanation

  • The British conquest of Burma was done through three successive wars in the 19th century. The conflict was initiated by border clashes. It was further fanned by expansionist urges.
  • The British merchants cast covetous glances on the forest resources of Burma and were keen to promote exports of their manufacture among their people. The British authorities also wanted to check the spread of the French commercial and political influence in Burma and the rest of south east Asia.
  • The British declared the first war on Burma in 1824, as a result of the Burmese occupation of Arakan and Assam, along the ill-defined borders between Bengal and Burma. The British forces occupied Rangoon in 1824. Peace came in 1826 with the Treaty of Yandabo.
  • The second Burmese War, which broke out in 1852, was almost wholly the result of British commercial greed, as the British timber firms had begun to take interests in the timber resources of Upper Burma.
