Which of the following factors directly affects/affect the direction of the wind?

1. Pressure gradient force

2. Coriolis force

3. Frictional force

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

Options

  1. a.

    1 only

  2. b.

    1 and 2 only

    Correct answer
  3. c.

    2 and 3 only

  4. d.

    1, 2 and 3

Explanation

  • The air is set in motion due to the differences in the atmospheric pressure. The air in motion is called wind.
  • The wind blows from high pressure to low pressure.
  • The wind at the surface experiences friction. In addition, the rotation of the earth also affects the wind movement. The force exerted by the rotation of the earth is known as the Coriolis force.
  • Thus, the horizontal winds near the earth surface respond to the combined effect of three forces – the pressure gradient force, the frictional force and the Coriolis force.
  • In addition, the gravitational force acts downward.
  • It should be noted that the direction of the wind is directly dependent upon the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force only. However, friction impacts the wind speed and slows it down. And as Coriolis force is proportional to the wind speed, friction indirectly plays a role in the wind direction.
