Explanation

  • Aurangzeb’s administration was challenged at its very nerve centre around Delhi by the Jats, Satnamis and Sikhs uprisings which weakened the empire. The backbone of these uprisings was formed by the peasantry, which suggests that the peasantry was deeply dissatisfied with the zamindars, nobles and the state.
  • A huge blow to the Mughal Empire was given by the series of foreign invasions. Attacks by Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali which were themselves the consequences of the weakness of the empire, drained the empire of its wealth, ruined its trade and industry in the north and almost destroyed its military power.
  • The fate of the Mughal Empire dwindled at the hands of weak successors. Due to the absence of any fixed rule of succession, the empire saw long wars of successions during the 18th century. These wars resulted in great loss of life and property. Moreover, these civil wars loosened the administrative fabric of the British Empire.
  • A final blow to the Mughal Empire was given by the rise of the British.
