Explanation

• India has a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with a number of countries in order to avoid taxing the income of Indian nationals residing in these countries twice. However, some countries, which are often called as ‘taxen havens’, have very low or no taxes, which is exploited by a number of investors.

• These investors can be investors from other countries or domestic investors from India who channelize their investments through a tax haven to avoid taxes in India. The investment by foreigners is known as Treaty Shopping and the investment by Indians is known as Round Tripping.
