Achievements and failures of planning process of the 12^th Five Year Plan

Achievements:

There is a considerable rise in Net Domestic Product, savings and investments.
India has achieved self-sufficiency in almost all the basic and capital goods industries and consumer goods industries.
Self-sufficiency in food grain production is achieved and the scourge of famines seems to have been decisively eliminated from the country.
There is a good deal of diversification in the industrial sector
The Plan has created significant infrastructure, particularly in the fields of transport, irrigation and telecommunication.
There has been tremendous development of educational sector and there has been significant growth in trained scientific and technical manpower.
Failures:
Inspite of planning, poverty exists at a massive scale in India (21% according to the Tendulkar Committee estimates).
Number of jobs created was inadequate to meet the needs of the rising population, which led to an increase in unemployment.
Inequality of income has not been reduced.
Inflation has been high most of the times in India.
